How the three levels work in Word Pairs
Word Pairs is nemiria’s second topic: six pairs of Spanish words that English speakers often mix up. Each pair sits at one or more of three learning levels, and each level adds rules to the ones before.
Foundation has five pairs: Ser vs Estar, Hay vs Estar, Qué vs Cuál, Muy vs Mucho and Bueno vs Bien, with the everyday rules for each, such as naming something or saying where it is, asking what something is or picking one, and describing a thing or how something is done.
Intermediate adds Por vs Para, and takes four of the pairs further: origin, jobs, time and events with ser; exclamations, cuál de and cuáles; muy bien, mucha hambre and mucho mejor; buen, the greetings and bien hecho.
Advanced covers the adjectives that change meaning between ser and estar, and the later uses of por and para: in someone’s place, per, how long, your view, who you work for.
In the app the learning level is one setting, shared by Verb Conjugation and Word Pairs. There is a separate check for the verbs: Which Spanish verb tenses are you ready for?
This is a quick check of word pairs, not a language exam, and it does not give you a course grade. It simply suggests where to start. Every sentence in it comes from the Word Pairs practice in the app.
